Dream Directions

I grabbed my dream notebook and quickly wrote down the images and actions that permeated my sleep just minutes before:

I was in the passenger seat.A well known spiritual leader was driving us along a narrow road. A stream was just ahead. We drove right across the stream. Up ahead a small pile of rocks appeared to block our path but we passed over them effortlessly. We made a left turn and traveled uphill on a street covered with running water. In moments we made a U-turn and went downhill in the direction of the water.

What was God trying to show me??

After several attempts at praying and figuring out the symbolism I grabbed my daughter and asked her to pray with me for God's interpretation. We sat quietly in the living room with great expectancy. I knew from experience that running water was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. It seemed odd that the first two times in the dream that I encountered running water I was traveling across or against its direction. Was God trying to show me disobedience? Was this a correction dream?

I prayed that God would align our thoughts and hearts to agree with His and that He would anoint our spiritual eyes and ears to see and hear what He was trying to tell me. As we waited I quieted my thoughts until my only focus was on hearing the Lord, not analyzing the symbols.

My thoughts turned to who was driving the car so I asked, "Lord, who does the driver represent?" I knew this well known person was one who was led by the Spirit and sensed he represented the Holy Spirit guiding me.

Next I asked, "Why are we crossing the stream instead of following it?" I was reminded that many times when being led by the Lord it would seem at first as if what He was asking me to do made no sense in the natural. I often found myself saying to Him, "That makes no sense." But after getting confirmations, and obeying, it would make perfect sense in the end.

To confirm this He reminded me of the morning that my daughter and I had to decide whether she would travel all alone for three days to Mozambique when her first flight had been cancelled (causing her to miss her travel group connections). That morning every fiber of my being was screaming, I can't let her do this! This can't be God! Yet when I prayed for His directions in light of the cancelled flight, He clearly spoke into my spirit, "Let her go."

He then showed me that although the path held some potential obstacles, He had led her over every one (the rocks in the road in my dream).

The next part of the dream also made no sense. "Why did we drive uphill against the flow of the water?" I distinctly felt impressed that when we follow God's leading it may, at times, seem to others like we are going against what common sense might indicate is His will. Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us that our ways are not His ways. His thoughts are higher than ours. But as we continue to stay close to Him, allowing Him to lead us, it will eventually pan out and be clear that we are in the center of His will (the U-turn in my dream). All the more reason to know His Word and spend time daily in His presence.

Takeaway Points:
  • "You are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]" (Romans 8:9, AMP).
  • God loves to speak to us in dreams, when our minds are asleep and our spirits are awake, so be sure to record what He is saying to you as soon as you wake up.
  • If any part of your dream is symbolic, then the entire dream is symbolic. Seek God for the interpretation rather than relying solely on someone else's list of dream symbols. While some symbols may be universal (like running water), many will be specific to you.
  • Many people say, "God doesn't speak to me," yet they are having dreams and not recording them or praying about them.

  1. This is encouraging. I've been asking God to show me what 2 troubling dreams I had mean. I prayed about this specifically this morning. I even asked God to reveal to someone else what they mean and that person would tell me like Daniel told the king. Praying for an answer soon.

    1. Angela, I encourage you to continue to seek God about the interpretation of your dreams. But even if you do not understand them now, trust that God will reveal the interpretation in His perfect timing. Blessings..Jane

  2. Hi Ms Jane, I just purchased your book and am excited to read! I have the faith that God hears me, but I want to pray more effectively. I'm 33, no kids, no husband and I'm believing God for my family. Anyone that reads this please agree and pray with me, I know there is power in agreement. I'll follow back after its manifested! Thanks for encouraging me to believe.

    1. Your comment reminds me of Hebrews 11:6. Without faith it is impossible to please God. He rejoices when we pray with faith. He hears every one of your prayers. I pray His richest blessings for a family for you! Blessings...Jane

  3. Thank you also for this article. Waiting for your book to arrive.
I have some very vivid dreams or nightmares. However my family is going through trying times and we are in the battle of our lives. Last night I had 2 dreams of my husband and i felt positive when I awoke to go to the bathroom. I have no idea of the dream or how I know it was about my husband. Normally I awake stressed and sad everyday, pretty much for the last 5 years . Reached out to God, I pray so much a day yet I don't hear anything from God . Need answers and all I want is for him to guide my life . When I awoke for the day I was sad like normal though and have no recollection of the 2 good dreams or why I was sad when I awoke, could be because I always am. Our family could use your prayers , if you would be so kind to do so. Someone connected the way you are, I hope to achieve and have a relationship like that with the Lord. Thank you!

    1. Thank you for writing. When we have recurring nightmares and bad dreams we have to look for an open door to the enemy. It could be depression and a need to seek medical help for that. It could be allowing ungodly things into our lives - inappropriate entertainment or activities, even objects in our home. A great book to read to learn how to cleanse your home is Protecting Your Home from Spiritual Darkness by Chuck Pierce and Rebecca Sytsema. Ask the Lord to show you how the enemy is gaining access to your life. I also encourage you to declare Scripture like Psalm 4:8 out loud over yourself before you go to sleep and read the Bible right before closing your eyes. I hope that helps. My prayers are with you. Blessings...Jane
